Are Crocs for Toddlers Fashionably Acceptable?

by e on April 20, 2011

Against my God-given fashion sense, and completely of my own free will, I bought my toddler hot pink Crocs. The plastic shoes you see every kid wearing at the beach and the pool. The same Crocs I swore my child would never wear. Those Crocs. These Crocs.

Sure they look innocent enough, but these Crocs may very well be the gateway to other drugs… Sweatpants tucked into Uggs…Obnoxious highlights that look so streaky they could never be mistaken for real hair…. tanning salons.

You see, I would never wear Crocs. You can tell me how “comfortable” they are and how “easy” they are to slip off and on, and how they are “perfect” for the summer all you want, but what I see? Sweatboxes. Sweatboxes of sweaty feet, stinky toes and dirty toenails.

And, to be completely frank, I am just not sure why adults are wearing Crocs. What would Stacey and Clinton say about Crocs?

So why did I buy them? Why did I break down and pay the twenty-something dollars for a pair of plastic sweatboxes?

Blame Tina from Life Without Pink. Because while shopping at the Crocs store for her son, she casually mentioned this: I love these shoes because he can put them on himself!

Style or no style, my baby’s putting on these suckers herself. And you know what? She loves them. LOVES.

Isn’t that a croc?

I’m SO with you on never, EVER buying them for myself, but have often thought of getting them for McKenna for that reason. How is she doing with them??

Dominic has multiple pairs. Not only has he put on his own shoes forever (bless you, Lord), but he’s allergic to the adhesive they use to put shoes together. Crocs have no allergens and my son no longer has eczema covered scaly feet. It’s heaven! And you know what, I don’t give one fat, hair crap how ugly they are. He loves them and his feet are happy. :-)

I am with you… and it is pretty much my motto for everything toddler related – “whatever works!”

Jen April 20, 2011 at 8:21 am

I do believe that crocs are totally toddler chic!

To think the words “crocs” and “chic” could be in the same sentence!

Having worked at a shoe store that specializes in fitting little kids feet into good quality shoes, I’m begging you to not let her wear these everyday. While I agree that they are EASY PEASY (and I can’t even begin to imagine already having a little one while pregnant!) when it comes to get her shoes for the winter it will be a nightmare :( I honestly HATED working the end of August and beginning of September at the shoe store because all of the kids would come in wearing crocs and they would need new school shoes. And every.single.cottonpicking. shoe would be too tight (even though they really weren’t!) because they had been wearing crocs all summer. And about 90% of those kids would leave the store screaming and crying and their parents would have to bring them back another day to get shoes. Some had to come in three or four times before they would finally get school shoes.

However, coming from the easy side, if you make sure that she alternates these shoes with some others, you should be ok, especially since these are easy. I’m not trying to be mean, I’m just trying to warn you that if she wears these everyday this summer and then you want her to have a different type of shoe for fall/winter (like tennis shoes or some sort of boots) it’s going to be a stressful shopping trip.

Plus, if you take her to get her feet measured, and you’ve alternated shoes so she doesn’t complain about the new shoes being too tight, the sales people will love you and won’t make rude remarks about you when you leave :) (not that I would have EVER done that with some of the “angels” we had come in! ha!)

I would not have even thought of that! We alternate between Stride Rites, Vans, Crocs and soon… sandals!

Most parents don’t think about it until the kid is throwing a class A temper tantrum in the middle of the store :) Thank you for rotating the shoes-your shoe people will thank you too!

Hideous as they are, both my kids wear them…and all I can say is no other shoe is easier to clean pee-pee out of

This coming from the girl who (used to anyway) live in barefeet and Birks… LOVE YOU!

Ellen-TCMom April 20, 2011 at 4:16 pm

I love it, I was you a few years ago then I got them for my girls for the same reason you did, I even have a few pairs for me but the cuter ones not the boxes and I still waffle on whether I really like them, they make good house shoes though!

e April 20, 2011 at 4:20 pm

The cuter ones try to be cute… but they’re still sweat boxes! House shoes I can do though :)

I was against Crocs for the same reasons and refused to buy them. My mom bought my almost 4yo daughter a couple pairs last year. She loves them and wears them as slippers around the house and at school. I have a cheap pair that were really great for climbing ladders and painting the walls!

Climbing ladders and painting? Yup, those seem to be good ways to wear crocs!

Tina @ Life Without Pink April 21, 2011 at 7:17 am

I said I would never buy them for my kids and then last year I gave in. My son loved them and they were so easy for him to put on….so here I am this year and both boys have them. Now I would NEVER in a million years where myself {not my style} but they are kid approved!

I was sold at “he puts them on himself.” Tori’s getting some…at least for wearing at the beach!

I know, right?

Jenn April 21, 2011 at 12:28 pm

You crack me up! I think the exact same way. As for adults wearing these, the only excuse I can think of is if people are literally on their feet all day. But, hey … I walk miles in heels all day long and you don’t see me slipping into a pair of crocs! For my daughter though … well, I just might consider this an option now. :)

I’m a big Croc’s fan. I only wear mine for gardening and yard work, but Maddy wears her’s all the time. They were one of the first pairs of shoes she could put on by herself. They clean out or off easily and if you find a deal they can be pretty inexpensive too. Best kid shoes ever!

e April 22, 2011 at 9:05 pm

But they are supposed to be worn for gardening!! And you probably look fab in them anyway.

Missy April 22, 2011 at 4:46 pm

Yeah, I got crocks for my kids a few years ago. It might be because I did it and am now rationalizing, but I do think they look cute on kids. BUT. If I EVER wear them myself, arrest me. Seriously.

Missy, I am so with you!

Missy April 22, 2011 at 9:14 pm

And let me correct my spelling and say CROCS – sometimes when I’m trying to “whip off a quick comment” when my kids are being hooligans a spelling error is inevitable. :)

Carabee April 24, 2011 at 4:38 pm

It will be a cold day in hell before a pair of Crocs touch my precious piggies, but I confess that my daughter wears them. They’re easy on/off, are virtually indestructible and clean up with a hose. Don’t worry, no Uggs tucked into sweatpants, though!

e April 25, 2011 at 9:30 am

This is why I love you!
